Community Dining Engagement and Inclusion Policy

Last Updated: 10 September 2025

At Food in Community, our heart has always been about creating a space where everyone feels welcome, equal, and valued. Sharing food with others is a powerful way to get to know people and to feel part of something good. Since 2012, we’ve been working side by side with our community—especially with people who are overlooked, excluded, are dealing with trauma, or tough times. That’s something we’re really proud of.

Every now and then, at our community cafés, we are asked why we encourage people to leave political, religious, or potentially heated debates at the door. The simple answer? Because over the years we’ve built something  special—a safe, relaxed space where worries can be set aside for a little while. A place where you can enjoy live music, freshly cooked food, and just be.

That doesn’t mean we’re without a cause. Far from it! Our strapline since 2012 has been “Let’s bring it to the table”, and we’ve been passionate about:

  • Making sure people have access to good, nutritious meals.
  • Reducing isolation and loneliness through shared meals. Where cost is not a barrier to connection.
  • Supporting and promoting organic growing—for healthier people and the regeneration of biodiversity.
  • Tackling food waste and prioritising reuse of materials.
  • Being an exemplar that other communities around the world have been positively influenced by

And since 2022, we have teamed up with the Independent Food Aid Network to campaign for a cash-first approach to poverty—because we believe people on low incomes deserve more freedom and control over their lives, not to mention access to  assistance that can help tackle money issues at the root of their worries.

So, while we completely understand how strongly people feel in these challenging times, we do ask that you respect our little oasis. Sometimes all someone needs is an hour to relax, recharge, feel safe, feel part of something positive and kind.

If you’d like to share leaflets or materials on the tables, please contact us in advance of the day. Thanks for helping us keep the space welcoming for everyone!
