Food Allocation Policy for Organisations

Food in Community is committed to distributing the food we are entrusted with fairly, responsibly and where it can achieve the greatest positive impact for people and communities.

How We Allocate Food
When allocating food, we may consider:
• The level of need among the people an organisation supports.
• The number of people likely to benefit.
• The suitability, quantity and timing of available food.
• An organisation’s ability to respond to offers and use the food.
• Geographic coverage and the need to maintain a resilient network of community partners.
• Alternative sources of support available to the organisation and its service users.
• The need to minimise waste.
• Any reasonable wishes expressed by the donor, where these are consistent with our values, legal obligations and operational requirements.

Fair and Equitable Access
We recognise that equal access is not always equitable access. Where resources are limited, we may prioritise food where it can deliver the greatest positive impact.

Food Availability
We work actively with growers, food businesses, distributors and other partners to increase the supply of food available for redistribution. However, surplus food is a limited and variable resource, with fresh produce also being seasonal, and demand can sometimes exceed supply. As a result, we cannot guarantee the availability or quantity of food and may operate waiting lists or prioritisation arrangements when necessary.

Equality, Diversity and Inclusion
Food in Community does not discriminate and allocates food in accordance with our Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) Policy. We are committed to making allocation decisions fairly, transparently and with due regard to dignity, equality of opportunity and community benefit.

Final Decisions
Final allocation decisions remain at the discretion of Food in Community and may vary according to supply, donor requirements and operational considerations.
