Food in Community is an innovative grassroots food hub, established in 2012 and based near Totnes, Devon. Our mission is simple and powerful: to reduce food waste, tackle food insecurity, promote social inclusion, and make sustainably produced surplus food accessible to communities across the South West.

As one of the first food hubs in the UK, we’ve pioneered community‑powered approaches to food redistribution. Teams of volunteers rescue donated vegetables and fruit from farms, orchards and market gardens that would otherwise go to waste.  Our Pay What You Can community dining events – created using rescued organic produce – are joyful events and the first of their kind nationally, offering nutritious meals and a warm welcome to everyone, regardless of income.

Alongside our redistribution work, we run a vibrant community garden on a working farm, where volunteers grow food, learn new skills, and build meaningful connections. This hands‑on collaboration between farm and community strengthens local resilience and deepens understanding of where our food comes from.

Looking ahead, our vision reaches far beyond our own region. We aim to create a blueprint that communities around the world can use to rescue surplus fruit and vegetables and redistribute them in a nature‑friendly, socially just way. By sharing what we’ve learned, we hope to inspire and support others to build local food systems that nourish people, strengthen community and restore the natural world.
